Located in Darwin City, the Chung Wah Society is a social and sporting club for Darwin’s burgeoning Chinese population. The temple of the Chung Wah Society was originally built in 1887, and, having survived the ravages of war and natural disasters, has undergone several restorations. The religion practiced at the temple is a combination of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism. Sitting next to the serene area of the temple is the NT Chinese Museum, where visitors can learn about the history of the Chinese population in the Northern Territory. On the grounds can be found a sacred Bodhi tree, and it believed to be a direct descendant of the tree under which Buddha is thought to have gained enlightenment.
